Biography
Josh Christian-Young begins his fourth season at Tulane in 2023.
Under Christian-Young’s leadership in 2022 as a defensive backs coach, Tulane’s defensive backs unit finished the season ranked second in the AAC in interceptions. Senior defensive back Macon Clark was named First Team All-AAC and tied 8th nationally in forced fumbles.
Christian-Young’s unit also saw two defensive backs sign as rookie free agents following the 2023 NFL Draft, including Clark and Larry Brooks.
During the 2021 campaign, Christian-Young served as the outside linebackers coach and played a key role in the Tulane defense having players ranked in the Top 10 in the conference in passes defended and interceptions in 2021.
That campaign DL Darius Hodges finished with 16.5 tackles for loss, which was the most in the AAC and ranked 13th in the nation. In addition, Tulane's defense ranked fifth in most sacks per game during 2021.
In his first season in Uptown in 2020, Christian-Young’s defensive backs played a pivotal role in helping the Green Wave defense rank among the league’s Top 5 in scoring defense, interceptions and redzone defense.
Tulane’s 2020 defensive backs helped Tulane lead The American (tied for 14th overall) in passes broken up with 42. In addition, the Green Wave’s 51 passes defended ranked second in the AAC and tied for 19th in the nation, while their nine interceptions ranked 35th nationally.
Christian-Young is a familiar face to the Green Wave coaching staff, having coached and played under Tulane head coach Willie Fritz. He joins Tulane after serving on the Army West Point defensive staff for the past five seasons from 2015-19.
During his final two seasons in West Point, New York, he coached the safeties for the Black Knights, which finished the 2019 season fifth in the nation in passing yards allowed and 30th in total defense. Christian-Young also supported Army’s recruiting efforts throughout the Southern United States.
Christian-Young arrived at Army as a defensive assistant in July 2015 and was promoted to cornerbacks coach for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
During the 2018 campaign, Army ranked eighth in the nation in total defense, limiting opponents to just 295.5 yards per game. The Black Knights also ranked 10th in scoring defense as they held foes to just 17.7 points per game.
In 2017, Army boasted the nation’s 14th-best pass defense unit.
In 2018 and 2019, Christian-Young coached Elijah Riley, Mike Reynolds and Ryan Velez to All-Independent Team honors.
He helped the Black Knights win back-to-back bowl games in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He oversaw the offensive scout team and served as the administer of defense and opponent personnel for Army
Prior to his time in West Point, Christian-Young served as the cornerbacks coach at Georgia Southern from 2014-15 and worked under Fritz during that time. During his two seasons, the Eagles finished with a 16-7 record and won the 2014 Sun Belt Championship.
A two-time graduate of the University of Central Missouri, Christian-Young obtained a Bachelor of Science in history in 2011 and a Master of Arts in sociology in 2013. He also graduated with a Master of Education in higher education administration from Georgia Southern.
Christian-Young played as a strong safety at Central Missouri where he played for Coach Fritz.
Christian-Young and his wife Kristin have a daughter, Adalyn, and a son, Nolan.
