Biography
The University of Georgia Athletic Department announced that Steven Drummond has been named Executive Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications. In his role, Drummond will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic communication campaigns and leading the execution of the organization’s internal and external communications strategy. He will oversee the UGA sports communications team led by Claude Felton, digital and social media strategy, content creation, and overall communication efforts for the University of Georgia's 21 varsity sports programs.
Drummond joins the UGAAA after spending the past 22 years as a senior executive in the National Football League with the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars. At Carolina, Drummond most recently served as the organization’s vice president of football operations and senior advisor to ownership. Drummond managed all facets of the football operations department, equipment, video, football information technology, and player engagement program while working closely with ownership to advise and support organizational decision-making and messaging.
Previously, Drummond served as vice president and chief communications officer, overseeing the organization’s front-facing brands and directing public relations, digital and social media, broadcast video content, community relations, and historical/alum affairs.
"Steven Drummond is a highly respected professional in the world of sports communication, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the Bulldog family," said Josh Brooks, J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics. " He has a deep understanding of the role that effective communication plays in the current landscape of college athletics, and his leadership, strategic vision, and ability to connect with people will play a crucial role in elevating our organizational performance.”
“I am truly humbled and honored to join the University of Georgia Athletic Department,” Drummond said. “President Morehead, Josh Brooks, and Darrice Griffin have a clear vision for building championship programs and providing elite student-athlete experiences in this time of rapid change in intercollegiate sports. My family and I can’t wait to join the Bulldog family.”
Drummond was promoted from assistant director of communications to director of communications in 2015 and executed the team’s public relations strategy in a season that saw Carolina advance to Super Bowl 50.
In 2017, he was elevated to director of communications and digital media, where he led the organization through the transformation of its social media, digital video, website editorial, and broadcast/audio platforms, positioning the Panthers as one of the top social and digital media brands in the NFL.
In 2012 and 2021, Drummond was selected by the NFL to participate in the Stanford University League of Leaders executive development program, which provided an opportunity to get a broad and strategic understanding of the industry, operations, and competition from Stanford GSB professors and senior NFL management.
A native of Rock Hill, S.C., Drummond started his career as communications coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2002-05. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 2001 and earned a master’s degree in sports management from PennWest California in 2009. Drummond is currently pursuing his MBA at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina.
